Ethics in Long Term Care

As a result of the New Jersey Supreme Court's 1985 decision  In the Matter of Claire Conroy, the Office of the Ombudsman has become the overseer of ethical decision making in long-term care facilities.

In recent years, with the assistance of a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and in cooperation with the Cooper Hospital University Medical Center, The Ombudsman's Office has sponsored and encouraged the development of fourteen (14) Regional Long Term Care Ethics Committees throughout the State.

Facilities are encouraged to tap this resource when confronted with issues of bio-medical ethics, or merely the day-to-day ethical issues that arise everywhere. With the assistance of a grant from the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, and also in cooperation with a nationally-recognized palliative care team from Cooper Hospital University Medical Center, the NJDHSS has coordinated training for facility staff in the provision of palliative care, to assist those at the end of their lives to spend their final days in dignity and comfort.
